NYC mayor Bill Deblasio is big on "equality.'. However, in the area where it matters the most, he and ACS fail miserably. In NYC, ACS preys on black and hispanic families in order to remove their children as quickly as possible. The numbers are staggering. WHY? The answer is simple, they are easy targets for ACS workers. ACS targets low income families with limited educational resources and job opportunities. These families are forced to accept court appointed attorneys that with some exceptions, rubber stamp the removal of their children. In our 20 years of practice we have seen exactly 5 white children removed, while countless black and hispanic children have been torn from their parents. The vast majority of children in the foster care system should not be there. But, it is a huge money maker for state and local agencies like ACS. The goal of ACS is to keep the funding flowing. Like any business, they must have customers. Hopefully the next mayor can fix this injustice.
